The St. Louis Cardinals are the current World Series championships. 2006 saw the opening of the new Busch Stadium. They had their longest losing streak that June (eight games) and then another one in July, and a seven game streak in September. However, despite nearly losing it all, the Cardinals came back to win the National League Central Title after Atlanta beat Houston.

This put the Cardinals into the post season with the third-worst record for a playoff team, 83-78. Forecasters did not expect them to make it very far.
