The San Diego Padres started flirting with success in 1984. This was their first win at a National League West Pennant. This was a small feat in itself considering that the team had no players with 100-RBI and had only two batters with 20-HR. The Padres defeated the Chicago Cubs in the last three games to win the pennant, and went on to the World Series. There they faced the Detroit Tigers and lost.

For the next decade, the San Diego Padres could not pull the team together for another win. Despite having several All-Star players, the team collapsed. They finished dead last in 1987. They had a winning season in 1989, but there was plenty of tension between the players.

The team was sold in 1990, getting a new look with their change in uniforms. Again, they had several top players, the team still could not get it together, and several of the best players went on to other teams. The Padres finished in last place yet again in 1994.

1996 saw some improvements for the San Diego Padres. The team finally won the National League West pennant from the Los Angeles Dodgers. Unfortunately, they fell to the St. Louis Cardinals at the National League Division games.

1998 saw the Padres in their former glory. Kevin Brown and Greg Vaughn both had exceptional years, and the San Diego Padres ended up with the National League West Pennant and the best season yet. They went on to beat the Houston Astros in the National League Division games, as well as the Atlanta Braves in a tight NLCS race. This set them off to play against the New York Yankees for the World Series, and the Padres were creamed 4 to 0. It was not until 2005 that the Padres won another Pennant.
