The 1946 Pittsburgh Pirates saw some changes for the team. The long term ownership of the Barney Dreyfuss family was over, and a syndicate bought the team. The syndicate included Bing Crosby as one of its members. Barney Dreyfuss owned the team from 1900 until his death in 1932. Forbes Field, which he built, was the first modern concrete and steel baseball stadium, and many also credit him with creating the World Series as it is today.
One Pittsburgh Pirates retired player, Bob Friend, owes much of his success to working with the Pirates in the 50s and 60s. He joined the New York Yankees and the New York Mets his final year in baseball (1966) and went on to be the first man to lead in ERA while pitching for a team that was in last place.
1979 the Pittsburgh Pirates went to the World Series for the fifth and final time so far. They adopted the disco anthem “We Are Family” as their theme song that year. After that, the team went down hill, and has not made it back to the World Series yet.
