One of the more recent controversies in the Colorado Rockies history happened in June 2006. The newspaper, USA Today, reported that the management had instituted a Christian code of conduct. This included banning explicit music and men’s magazines like “Maxim” form the clubhouse. This of course sparked a debate as to whether or not it was forcing players to become Christians in order to keep their jobs, though the management maintained that it had no problems with people of other faiths, and that it was more of an issue of quality of character than religion.

Another controversy that the Colorado Rockies have dealt with was when they installed a humidor in 2002. This cast some suspicion on the talent of the team. Since the humidor has been put in, runs and games with high scores have dropped. However, the Rockies claim that this has to do with the extremely dry air in Denver, and that baseballs kept at the humidity level recommended by the manufacturer are softer and therefore travel less of a distance when hit when compared to harder balls. Other thoughts that the decrease in illegal steroid use due to increased testing may have influenced the scoring as well. Skeptics of course claim that the only reason a change would be made would be to benefit the home team, while other baseball fans suggest that every team keep a humidor to keep balls at the precise size and weight they are designed to be.
