The Braves first played as the Braves in 1912. The name came from the owner, James Gaffney, who had the nickname “the Brave of Tammany Hall.”
Just two seasons after, the Braves seemed doomed for a last place finish. Then, in early July, the team came out of nowhere to win 41 out of the next 53. Two more wins against the New York Giants put them into first place, and they became the only team to win the pennant after being in last place so late in the season. July 18th saw them in last place, three days later they were in fourth, and by August 12th, less than a month later, they were in second place. They were still the underdogs going into the World Series, but they managed to win against the Athletics.
Unfortunately, the Braves went downhill after 1916. In 1935, the team found new owners, who briefly tried to change them into the Boston Bees. Five years later, still without luck, the name was changed back. The next several decades had on and off success for the Braves, until the 1990s.
The 1990s marked the rise to fame for the Atlanta Braves. They made the playoffs every year, won the National League Pennant five times, and won the World Series in 1995.
