Rawlings baseball gloves are remembered as far back as the 1950s when some of the game’s greatest players were still in the game. This includes 1953 when the Boston Red Sox were in the spotlight. For 52 years Boston had been a two-team town, with local loyalties divided between the Red Sox and the Braves. That division had never been truly equitable, however. Boston was known as a Red Sox town. The gulf between the two clubs was never more evident than in 1952 when the Sox drew more than 1.1 million fans and the Braves brought in only 281,000 fans. So in 1953, the Braves applied for and received permission to move their franchise to Milwaukee. It marked the first break in the alignment of either major league since 1902, and it was the beginning of a rearrangement of the big leagues that would see teams migrate around the country. What made the subsequent moves inevitable was the financial success of the Braves in Milwaukee; it was immediate and astounding.

The move also seemed to be a spiritual awakening for the Braves as they moved from seventh place to second. Second place was great for the Braves, but they needed a pair of field glasses to see first place that year. Repeating as pennant winners were Charlie Dressen’s Brooklyn Dodgers, fielding what many people still regard as one of the greatest teams in National League history. The Dodgers took over first place at the end of June and thereafter proceeded to massage the league and dispel any notions of a pennant race. There was also a story behind Furillo’s batting championship. In a game against the Giants at Polo Grounds in Septemenber, Furillo was hit by a pitch throng by Ruben Gomez. Standing on first base, the hot-tempered Furillo began an irate exchange of words with Leo Durocher, whom Furillo suspected had ordered the errant pitch, and who was not one of Carl’s favorite people anyway.
