Nokona baseball gloves weren’t around when Robin Roberts was playing baseball. One of the greatest pitchers of all time was Robin Roberts. If the Phillies had a better ball team in the 1950s, Roberts would have been considered more widely as the best ever. He probably could have won 400 games. He was known for being a pleasure for any manager to have on his ball club. He was difficult to handle for only reason: that he wanted to pitch every day and thought he could. Roberts completed many games with only 75 pitches, so there were times he pitched on only two days’ rest. Roberts was born in Springfield, Illinois, in 1926. He was a fine all-around athlete, but baseball was the game closest to his heart. He first attracted attention pitching for Michigan State and then for a semipro league in Vermont in 1947.

In 1947, the Phillies brought Roberts to Wrigley Field for a tryout. After watching him throw, one of the Phillies coaches was going to make a point to keep Roberts. They signed him for a $20,000 bonus. Roberts had great speed, control and stamina. This is what Roberts demonstrated throughout the heyday of his glittering career. Content to let batters hit the ball, he led in strikeouts only twice. Though working more than 300 innings for six consecutive years, Roberts never walked more than 77 batters in a season, and in fact went over 70 walks only twice in his 19-year career. For five consecutive years, Roberts led the National League in complete games, a span during which he completed 140 of 191 starts. When it was all over, Roberts had a lifetime record of 286-245. He wanted to hit 300 but was happy with his career despite not having Nokona baseball gloves.
