Baseball Field Equipment

In order to play baseball, you must have bases. There are a few different types of bases, judging as far as how they’re made. Also, you must have rubber for the pitching mound and a home plate, which is made differently from a regular base. The home plate sits embedded into the ground and is no higher than ground level, where as the bases sit atop the field. The first, second, and third bases are covered with a very thick layer of white rubber, and there is also a foam-like, cushiony rubber inside the base, making the base firm, yet not so firm as to hurt someone stepping on it or sliding into it. The home plate is a pentagon-shaped base, also made of thick rubber, but is thin, so there is nothing filling the inside of it. The pitching mound is the same way, only the pitching rubber is a long rectangle that sticks out of the ground more than home plate but less than the bases, but once again, is not very thick.

Baseball Field Maintenance

The grass in the baseball diamond must be kept mowed, and the dirt on the field must be laid out evenly, so the players don’t stumble while in the game. One must also be sure that no parts of the fence are loose, and that all entrances, exits, and boundaries around the field are secure. Someone, usually the umpire, must also go out on the field every once in a while and dust off the home plate, which tends to get dirty due to players at bat adjusting themselves to the proper stance, as well as players kicking dirt up as they take off from the base, and players sliding into home. Home plate dusting is done with a small tool similar to a paintbrush, but bigger, wider, and thicker. Of course, home plate does not have to be completely dirt-free, but players and umpires do need to be able to see the base.

Also, it is imperative that the white lines on the field are prominent; the umpire has to be able to judge whether a ball went out on a foul. Chalk is ground up and put into a special vehicle much like a riding lawn mower that deposits the chalk onto the ground in a thick white line.
