Baseball Gear

Baseball gear has had a tremendous effect on the game throughout the years. Baseball gear has changed over time, but only slightly. Baseball gear typically includes a mitt, bat, a ball, batting gloves, a cap, perhaps sunglasses if you’re a fielder, and some knee and shin guards for sliders. Baseball gear technology has changed over the years. It’s certainly different today than it was in 1952.

Baseball people wondered what effect Brooklyn’s crushing and heartbreaking last-minute loss in 1951 would have on the club in 1952. Complicating things for Charlie Dressen’s team was the loss of ace right-hander Don Newcombe to military service for two years. The Dodgers in 1952 still had the most potent lineup in the league. On the mound for the Dodgers was a 28-year-old rookie right-hander in Joe Black. Black had his appropriate baseball gear and was a big, strong, hard thrower who wasn’t even on the roster in spring training. Working out of the bullpen all year, Black went 15-4 with 15 saves. Leo Durocher’s Giants jumped off to a fast start, winning 26 of their first 34, and were in first place until the end of May.

Baseball gear continued to have an impact throughout the 1952 season. The giants, despite the back ailments that afflicted ace right-handers Maglie and Jansen, did make a late-season charge at the Dodgers that was menacing enough to evoke nightmares of 1951. The Giants were aided immensely by a 28-year-old relief pitching rookie of their own, Hoyt Wilhelm, a master of a tantalizing knuckle ball that was going to provide major-league employment for him for 20 years. Wilhelm worked in a league-high 71 games that year, posting a 15-3 record with 11 saves and the lowest ERA in the league.

In September, the Giants had trimmed their first-place deficit to three games, but this time the Dodgers held firm and won the pennant by four games. Brooklyn’s pennant in 1952 was won primarily because of a crushing supremacy they maintained over the three bottom clubs, Cincinnati, Boston, and Pittsburgh, whom they devoured with a combined 54-11 record.

It was not an outstanding year for National League pitchers in contrast. They had their baseball gear, yes. There was only one 20-game winner, no 19-game winner, and just one 18-game winner. Picking your baseball gear is an important step to becoming a successful baseball player.
