Vintage Baseball Cards

The Professional Sports Authenticators (PSA) define a ‘vintage’ card as any card printed in 1971 or earlier, although in more common terms, it could probably be applied to any card made before ten years ago. A vintage card in good condition can fetch a price of anywhere between a few dollars to several thousand. Almost all the vintage cards that survive to this day are in the hands of private collectors, and many would not be willing to part with something so personally and financially valuable. The odds of finding a vintage card “in the wild,” as it were, are so small as to be practically nonexistent. Even finding one in a trade or comic store is an all but total rarity, and cards are far more likely to be purchased in auctions put on by private collectors.

Buying Vintage Baseball Cards

As nearly all such cards are in the hands of private collectors that more than likely paid a hefty sum to acquire them in the first place, anybody that wishes to buy a vintage card must be mentally and financially prepared to do the same. These cards are incredibly valuable to those who desire them and they will not be sold cheap. It would not be unexpected to find a collector asking for five hundred dollars or more for even a mildly rare card. The least valuable of the top ten most valuable baseball cards could cost as much as five thousand dollars. A vintage card could fall anywhere within that price gap, however the vast majority are on the lower end.

Vintage Baseball Card Auction

Whether in real life or on the internet, this is by far the best bet for acquiring vintage baseball cards. These cards are the kind of rare goods that show up in auctions fairly commonly. However, these can be a double-edged sword. Purchasing a vintage card at an auction may mean that you wind up paying as many as five times the appraised value of the card. A very notable example is the story of the ultra-rare 1909 Honus Wagner card. Already valued at $500,000 due to its extreme scarcity and age, a single 1909 Wagner sold for 2.3 million dollars at a recent online auction. It’s not likely that any other card would possibly cost that much, however the fact that they already cost less means that it’s easier for their cost to double, triple or worse.
