Baseball Cards
Although the cards are popular with children, most, if not all, of the serious baseball card collectors are adult fans. It’s not uncommon for adult fans to have amassed collections of hundreds of cards or more, simply through a casual interest in the hobby. Still others take their passion to a more serious extent, spending vast amounts of money and time not only on their cards but on specialized protection and storage equipment to ensure that their collection remains in perfect, mint condition. There are even some that take their interest so seriously that they are able to make their living entirely off of trading and selling extremely rare cards.
The Most Valuable Baseball Cards
A particularly old card, a rare card or a card that was somehow misprinted can be worth hundreds of dollars to the proper buyer. Even more so are cards of the so-called baseball “legends”: A “Babe” Ruth, Ty Cobb or “Shoeless” Joe Jackson card in good condition could each fetch between three and five thousand dollars. The most valuable card in the world is of 1909 Pittsburgh Pirates second baseman Honus Wagner, appraised as high as $400,000, and recently selling on eBay for over $2.3 million. Only one hundred are thought to still exist, and only ten of those are in good condition.
How Much Is My Collection Worth?
The answer to this largely depends on the age and condition of your collection, and the number of rare or misprinted cards. The age of your collection is important, as cards are printed in large quantities. If you’ve just started your collection will likely only contain cards that are readily available and, therefore, less valuable. In time, the cards in your collection will go out of print, and the remainders will either be snatched up by collectors or drop off the face other earth, shooting their value through the roof. The condition is also important, as a well-kept and maintained collection is not only more valuable, but the better care will safeguard it from decay and time, increasing your collection’s lifespan. Finally, rare or misprinted cards can sometimes be as valuable as the entire remainder of your collection. A card with an error is often quickly caught and pulled from production, and only a scant few are released to the public. The value of these cards then skyrockets due to their rarity. In short, the most important aspect to building a valuable collection is dedication: Dedication to keep it, dedication to maintain it and dedication to search for rare cards to add to it.
