The Seattle Mariners baseball schedule starts with the Seattle Mariners doing spring training in Arizona. The 2007 season is met with some optimism, though the coach, Mark Hargrove resigned as of July 1st and John McLaren was named as his replacement.
The Mariners have an interesting history. They were created as the result of a lawsuit, after the Seattle Pilots were bought and moved to Milwaukee and Bud Selig, the City of Seattle, King County, and the State of Washington sued the American League for breach of contract in 1970. The suit continued for six years, until the American League offered an expansion team in exchange for the city dropping the suit.
The first game was a sell out, though they lost 7-0. The next decade offered little to characterize the team, and they slowly earned a reputation of giving poor performances and losing games.
Hope came in 1989, with the rookie season of Ken Griffey, Jr. Finally, in 1991, the Mariners had their first winning season, though it only put them in fifth place in their division. Jim Lefebvre was let go, and Bill Plummer joined for the 1992 season, only to be let go the next year. Lou Piniella was hired as his replacement, and the fans met the change with excitement. He managed the team for the next nine years, earning two Manager of the Year Awards.
From that point forward, the Seattle Mariners continued to improve, making it to the American League Championship Series for the first time in 1995. They have had limited success on and off since then, though they have yet to win the World Series.
